Mariguini Settlement

Mariguini Settlement, located in Nairobi’s South B area along Marikani Road, borders Mater Misericordia Hospital and Bima Estate and is situated approximately 7 kilometers southeast of Nairobi’s Central Business District. It is part of the broader Mukuru slum belt, characterized by high population density, poor infrastructure, and insecure land tenure. The re-verification exercise aimed to update and validate data previously collected in 2011 and 2018 to reflect the current population and socio-economic realities.

Demographic Characteristics

The updated population comprises 4,124 people, reflecting both long-term residents and new additions. Among the enumerated population:

  • 1,411 were verified in 2024, confirming their status through identification documents.
  • 1,020 were enumerated as previously recorded residents missing from the 2018 register.
  • 382 residents turned 18 after 2018, necessitating independent enumeration.
  • 1,311 residents were not verified, either due to absence or unverified records.
The gender distribution among the population remains balanced, with 54% male and 46% female. The settlement is youthful, with 68% of residents under 45 years of age.

Residency and Income Levels

A significant proportion of residents (76%) are tenants, while only a minority own structures. Rental agreements remain informal, with 94% relying on verbal agreements. The average monthly household income is KSh 13,000, reflecting the financial challenges faced by the community. Tenants typically earn less than structure owners, whose average income is KSh 15,605. High unemployment persists, with 34% of residents unemployed, while others rely on self-employment and casual labor.
